The Art of Being Still

There's something about autumn that asks us to sit with ourselves. The leaves are done growing. The days are getting shorter. The world keeps turning, sure, but a little slower. Being still doesn't mean doing nothing. It means paying attention—to a cup of coffee getting cool in your hands, to the way the light comes through the kitchen window, to the person sitting across from you at the table. Kids know this without being told. A dog napping in a patch of afternoon sun knows it too. Somewhere between the busyness of summer and the quiet of winter, fall teaches us that sometimes the best thing we can do is simply *be*. So this week, when you find yourself at the grill or around a table, try it. Put the phone down. Listen more. Let a meal take its time. You might find that the stillness is where the good stuff happens.

Come sit. We'll make sure there's always a warm spot for you here.” — Uncle Sam
