The Gift of Listening

Fall's a quiet time. The world slows down a bit. The leaves settle. The pace eases. It's a good time to notice something simple: how rare it is to feel truly heard. When someone sits across from you and really listens—not thinking about what to say next, just taking in what you're saying—it changes the whole room. It changes how you feel. You can listen over coffee. You can listen over a meal. You can listen while someone tells you about their day, their worry, their win. You don't have to fix anything. You don't have to agree. You just have to be there. In a small town, we know our neighbours. We pass them at the store. We see them around. But listening—really listening—that's something we can give more of. It costs nothing. It takes time. And somehow, it's one of the things people remember longest.

“Come sit with us—we're always ready to listen.” — Uncle Sam
